Understanding the Significance of Kosher Wine

For those who are part of the Jewish community, finding kosher wine is extremely important. Luckily, it is not too difficult to find numerous wine varieties that comply with the religious beliefs practiced by this group. When a wine is deemed to be kosher, it has been produced according to the Jewish dietary laws which are a part of Judaism’s religious law. And depending upon the particular branch of Judaism one is a member of, the interpretation of kosher can be different. Some of the more strict branches have specific requirements, often including that wine be cooked or boiled during production. As you can imagine, there are challenges regarding taste when this method is practiced and this has resulted in many thinking that such wine is always lighter in color than those that are non-kosher.

Other less restrictive branches of Judaism are able to drink the vast majority of wines currently on the market. In general, wine does not contain ingredients that are considered to be non-kosher. American and Canadian wines in particular are often within compliance of all but the strictest of kosher standards and are considered by many Jewish people to automatically qualify as kosher. However, as with any group having sub-groups with slightly different versions of a rule, there tends to be much disagreement within the Jewish community about what is kosher and what is not. For those following stricter rules it can be hard to find good tasting wine that also satisfies their religion.

With all of this fuss about choosing a wine that meets one's religious requirements, many wonder why they should bother with drinking wine at all. As with many cultures and groups, wine is a large part of Jewish tradition with inclusions in holidays and many rituals. It would almost equate to having a holiday dinner without any food. Of course, you don't need to be Jewish to enjoy wine that meets kosher standards as it is widely available. Kedem and Manischewitz, both based in the north-eastern part of the United States, are two of the largest importers in the world of kosher wine ensuring that a great variety is available.
